2025 Building and Fire Code Update

The state updates the Building Code every three years. When Piedmont adopts the new codes, we can make local amendments with stronger requirements for energy efficiency and wildfire safety.

Timeline

  • Summer 2025: Planning and Public Engagement: Staff reviews new state codes, consults with neighboring jurisdictions, and considers community input on potential local amendments.
  • Fall 2025: Draft Local Amendments: Staff drafts proposed local amendments to state codes based on public input.
  • November 2025 (expected): City Council holds public hearings on proposed local amendments.
  • January 2026: New codes go into effect

As of 2026, Piedmonters building or renovating property will need to follow the latest state code, as well as any Piedmont-specific requirements for home hardening and energy efficiency.
