HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE

Many products found in households, garages and yards contain hazardous materials that must be disposed of properly. Take your household hazardous waste (HHW) to an Alameda County HHW Drop-Off Center facility.

It's easy, free, and the only legal way to dispose
of household hazardous waste.

The Alameda County household hazardous waste collection facilities accept the following household hazardous waste at no charge. State regulations limit the amount of waste you may transport to 15-gallons of liquid waste or 125 lbs. of solid waste. Individual items/containers must be no larger than 5-gallons and or weigh no more than 50 lbs.

Paint, stain varnish, thinner and adhesives, resins and putties, liquid and solid poisons (pesticides, cleaners, and fertilizers)

Auto products such as old fuel, motor oil, oil filters and batteries

Garden products including pesticides and fertilizers

Household batteries, fluorescent bulbs, mercury-containing devices and thermostats

NOTE:

Compact Florescent Bulbs will be recycled curbside if they are unbroken and in a sealed plastic bag left on top of the recycling cart

Home-generated "sharps" waste in approved containers

Coffee cans, bleach containers and soda bottles are NOT acceptable substitutes for approved sharps containers and cannot be accepted at Alameda County HHW facilities. Sharps containers are available for purchase at most pharmacies
